Gas Hydrates, Problem or Source of Energy

Gas hydrates are inclusion compounds in which certain non-polar or slightly polar molecules of a suitable size, stabilise the cages formed by hydrogen bonded water molecules at above or below ice point. Gas hydrates are considered troublesome for oil and gas industries, because transmission pipelines and hydrocarbon processing facilities could be blocked or damaged by hydrate formation. Recently, however, after the discovery of substantial gas hydrate deposits in permafrost and ocean sediments they are receiving attention as a potential energy source. The huge size of gas hydrate deposits may have an important environmental implication due to the fact that methane is a greenhouse gas and can have a positive feedback mechanism for global warming. In this paper after a brief discussion of the properties of gas hydrate and the required conditions for their formation. different methods of inhibition specific to the oil industry are covered. In relation to their role as a potential source of energy various methods for producing from gas hydrate reserves are considered.
