The project combines fundamental studies and field applied research in order to solve remaining and future challenges associated with the build up of inorganic precipitates (scale downhole, in the near wellbore area, and in the production system. An improved understanding of the fundamental mechanisms involved in all aspects of scale control will enable future challenges to be addressed more readily.

The programme examines a wide range of issues surrounding the impact of scale control on flow assurance. This includes aspects relating to:

  • the impact of chemical treatments on production e.g. relative permeability effects associated with squeeze treatments, and;

  • the need for minimal intervention e.g. the potential for combined treatments and the importance of mixed inorganic/organic scale deposits, including naphthenates.
