Experimental Set-up: Current Rock-Physics Velocity Measurements

Current Rock-Physics Velocity Measurements

Most acoustic measurements made in Rock Physics laboratories are taken over the length of a cylindrical core specimen. The figures (left) show how three traces are usually recorded (data courtesy Olivier Kirstetter):

  • A single P-wave trace.
  • Two orthogonally polarized S-wave traces.

Note that the S-wave first arrival is very difficult to pick accurately
