Energy research is a core activity at Heriot-Watt University with established expertise that spans exploration to conservation and an associated annual research income in excess of £5m. The perspective of energy research at the University has changed in recent years and our interaction with the international agenda of climate change, sustainability and security of supply has informed a 'big picture' vision of how best to match our skills-base to the emerging research challenges. Forward-looking consideration of the energy system has led to the formation of the Heriot-Watt Energy Academy. Energy is one of the main themes in the University Focus-on-the Future Strategy. Three new staff members have been appointed in Energy for Materials and Energy Economics in 2009. The Energy Academy capability is set to grow with new appointments in 2010.

The HWU Energy Academy is a pan-university initiative supported by all Schools at the Edinburgh, Orkney and Borders campuses. It has two principal objectives. Firstly, to consolidate energy research activities and facilitate interdisciplinary programmes, both within the university and with other HEIs. Secondly to ensure external parties can easily gain an appreciation of our vision, skills-base and active research projects. There is also a need to address the issues in the communities in which we live and work. The initiation of an Energy Joint Research Institute under the Edinburgh Research Partnership with Edinburgh University significantly extends the influence of the Energy Academy. Heriot-Watt University is also a key partner in Scotland’s Energy Technology Partnership. The Energy Academy is located in the newly refurbished Research Building No1 on the Research Park. The opening of the Postgraduate Centre supported by Cairn has seen the expansion of keynote lectures as part of the Energy Academy’s weekly seminar series.
